At the inauguration of the Society in August, 1996, a Committee was appointed to take responsibility for establishing and operating the activities of the Society until the 12th International Symposium on Carotenoids held July, 1999, in Cairns, Australia. At that time, the Society approved a Council with new members and associated positions to care for the Society operations. The Council consists of individuals with long experience in the carotenoid field, representing different geographical locations and covering all aspects of the field, both academic and commercial. The first official Society election was held in 2002 when new Councilors and a President-elect were instilled in office. Elections will be held triennially. At the business meeting of the 13th International Symposium on Carotenoids held January, 2002, in Waikiki, Hawaii, it was approved that the specialized and important positions of Secretary and Treasurer of the Society be appointed by the Council from within its own ranks.
